The biggest problem we have in driving: the notion that things occur
randomly. A crash is an "accident," and accidents "happen." Drivers "lose"
control, not toss it away; sometimes cars just "go out" of control, as though a
giant hand had swept them from the road. Fate, not failure or physics, kills
tens of thousands of us every year.
If we could fix that perception . . . if we could make people understand
that their cars are under their control and respond predictably to their
input--we might slash that toll.
I have no hope at all.
